Commercial Accountant

We are delighted to be working in partnership with one of Northern Ireland’s leading provider of energy and utilities services.  They are a company with a reputation for excellence both commercially and as an employer.  They now have the opportunity for a Commercial Accountant to join their finance team.  It is an excellent opportunity to work with a multi-disciplined team and to contribute to the overall growth and strategic direction on the business.  It is a varied role and the opportunity to acquire commercial skills and specialist market knowledge and to work on exciting and innovative projects.

The Commercial Accountant role will suit a highly motivated individual who enjoys managing a varied workload and is interested in working within a multi-disciplined team to support the financial, commercial and operational growth of the Domestic business.

Key Responsibilities:

Full Responsibility of Monthly & Quarterly Accounts & Reporting to include

  • Monthly P&L and Balance Sheet review against budget and LBE (Latest Best Estimate)

  • Working capital & cash flow analysis

  • Preparation of monthly Board reports

  • Presentation of results and variances to senior management

Business Planning Process

  • Management and review of the budgetary planning, challenging assumptions and results where necessary

  • Continuous LBE (Latest Best Estimate) planning in line with business performance, strategic outlook and market conditions. Working closely with key managers to ensure LBE forecasts accurately reflect forecast financial performance

  • Communicating results and updates to key stakeholders

  • Overseeing the development of existing reporting and forecasting models to meet changing business requirements 

Governance and Risk Management

  • Ensuring sound financial controls are in place to actively manage risk

  • Management of the risks associated with retail products offered (new and existing)

  • Responsible for regulatory return submissions to ensure compliance with licence and tax obligations 

Retail Strategy & Development

  • Work with the Senior Management Team to evaluate and model commercial initiatives and provide insight and direction on key business decisions

  • Develop the annual Five Year Business Plan in conjunction with the senior management team, providing robust challenge where appropriate

  • Work with the Group  teams to design and develop systems which support the strategic direction and growth of the Domestic business and ensuring that robust processes and controls are in place to protect the financial performance of the business

In addition to this core financial activities the individual will be expected to actively participate in the ISEM project in particular supporting the finance & retail team transition which will require integration of new IT applications, changes in commercial arrangements and a review of appropriate management & risk reporting.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Fully qualified accountant

  • Experience of managing: people, resources, projects with proven ability & interpersonal skills to work with various teams/stakeholders to achieve common objectives

  • Proven experience of delivering and being accountable for high level financial information to senior management

  • Ability to prioritise and manage a varied and significant workload, while consistently delivering results

  • Good working knowledge of computerised Accounts Packages and highly experienced in Excel and other MS packages

Desirable:

  • Experience of SAP and Cognos

  • Knowledge of the Electricity industry
